She felt restless and wasn’t ready to be in close quarters inside, she wrapped her shawl around her shoulders and decided to take a walk. As she went past the goat pen she noticed it was finally finished and the goats would now be contained. Seeing the animals made her think of home and the life that awaited her there.

Life was idyllic where she lived. Peaceful. With beautiful views of either the forest or the hills, depending on which way one looked. The day-to-day of living had never been boring or in any way bothersome. Each day, Alia woke up with a plan. Either to do with the goats or making cheese or any of the other many domestic tasks she helped with. When they weren’t busy with chores, her family often planned outdoor meals, to which neighbors were always invited.

She sighed and turned in a circle realizing that in her musing, she’d walked into the woods behind the cottage. A fallen tree invited one to sit and she went to it, sinking onto the hard surface and letting out a content sigh.

This was exactly what she needed, time alone to think.

If her father insisted she marry, she would of course. It would probably be Gerard Murray since her father was close to his. She closed her eyes and imagined the man and considered what it would be like to kiss him.

Gerard was not much older than her, had a kind disposition, and was fair of face. The fact he lived nearby would mean she would not have to go so far from her own family, which was good.

The sound of a branch cracking behind her made Alia turn. Expecting a deer to appear, she kept her eye on the foliage. Rather a deer than a boar, she scoffed.

Nothing happened. The silence resumed so she returned to her musings until another sound caught her attention.

Thinking it was best she return, she looked through the trees toward the cottage and noted that no one looked for her yet, so she could slip inside unnoticed. Perhaps she would go directly to bed. She must do whatever she could to protect her heart, which meant keeping as far from Gideon as possible.

When arms came around her from behind, her first thought was it must be Gideon. But when a grimy hand covered her mouth and a second man appeared in front of her, Alia realized she was in terrible danger.

The man in front of her neared and she kicked him betwixt the legs. He cupped himself with both hands and dropped to his knees.

She elbowed the man behind her, catching him between the ribs. He groaned but did not release the tight hold he had around her, or the hand over her mouth. So she jabbed again.

This time he released her, and she tried to run; however, he managed to grab her by the arm before she made it even a few steps. Alia’s scream was not as loud as she would have wished as she was breathless.
